Anyone know anything about this car? In particular, anyone any photos, especially of the interior?

Here's the text that goes with the photo, other than this I no nothing about the car.
Jimmy McRae - Toleman Group / SMT Chevette "Jim McRae (father of Colin McRae) in the SMT Chevette. This car I seem to remember was a 'clubman' specification car and only had a single cam 8 valve cylinder head. The idea of this specification was to make the car more affordable and cheaper to run for the privateer drivers." |

Thanks Dave. That's right, as far as I know, and it was used in the (Pace / Autosport?) national championship. It's also (different photo) in the
Robson book, and it's not the only car to have carried SMT 1.
Unfortunately, that seems to be the only information that's about. I was hoping for more details though, particularly technical and specs - what gearbox, what axle, 5 link or torque tube, who built the shell, etc. - and possibly some more photos; that one and the Robson one are everywhere.

Cheers Neil, that does help, thanks - your recollections confirm some stuff about the spec. I think I might have been wrong on the year, or McRae might have driven it two years, as I've now seen photos of him in the car in '78. If Rodney (or is it David?) is right about Bertie Law, that'd make the Kaby car a different one - I've also heard of a Chevette in completely
different colours running as SMT 1, so I suspect the registration's a bit misleading!

I bought an HS engine off a chap just north of Preston many years back and he had a works spec HSR sat in his garage, he said it had previously been registered
SMT 1 and driven by Mr McCrae. He was planning to break it at the time and it was stated to be an escort on the log book!!

States in the article "A few changes had been made to the Vauxhall Chevettes of Jimmy McRae and George Hill. McRae's single cam version had been
lightened with he addition of conciderably more fibreglass panels. Hill was running a new DTV built engine which had originaly been held by them as a spare for
Pentti Airikkala until after the RAC Rally. This engine had the big valves"

SMT1 was first used on the MDs car of SMT-------there was also SMT 1M
David Porter Joint SMT MD also had SMT1 on a few HSRs and also on BMWs the Number then was used on Rally Magnums & HSRs i think im right in saying that one of the numbers was used on the "chunky chicken" Magnum -----i think SMT 1M, this Car and a few others were built at SMT Perth |
