The last time I seen that car was at Doune Classic weekend 97 I think, I'm sure the owner was from Newtonmore near Aviemore. The Scottish DSG rep and I
had a cup of tea and a long chat with him and his wife about the car in his crew bus.

Hi, the car was owned by someone from Newtonmore. He bought it in deepest Englandshire as a rolling shell as far as I remember. It was a really tidy car in
good condition and he did speed events with it then put it up for sale. As was normal in those days nobody would buy the car and it ended up being broken. The
shell went to a chap in Ayrshire (?) who re-shelled his rally car into it. Not sure whether the identity went with the shell but it wasn't used for the
re-shell. The mechanical bits went to Ireland from memory. Shame really as that was a bit of history lost as well as a really good race car, don't know
what happened to the rally car.

Hi
I don't know if Tom raced it or not, maybe Ecure Cosse book would say but from memory not a lot about Chevette in it. Jimmy Mcrae raced it a few times. I think Tom Bell used to race the original ex Martin Group Chevette, I can't remember the reg no offhand, it was sold to a chap Mac Intyre from Helensburgh who re shelled it. I ended up with it eventually. A long time ago but It maybe went to Newtonmore! |

It was SVS646R. I raced, sprinted and hillclimbed it but really about the only original bit was the number. I sold it to Newtonmore but ended up with the
engine back, I think it still had the original works Lotus head, distributor had WBB on it. Sold the engine with a Firenza rolling shell a while back.
Don't know where the Chevette shell ended up but I suppose I could ask if anyone was particularly interested.

Looks very similar to something lurking in my garage, came with no engine or box.

Just a thought, couldn't have been many Works Lotus headed Vauxhalls, SMT bought their heads direct from Lotus. Viva Saloon YGS666M had an engine built to
this spec 255bhp, when the car was rolled and written off engine was probably put into a Chevette (circa 76).
Very interested as own SMT's other DTV rally car YES666M. Who's got the engine now?? Clive |

I think there were a lot of DTV engines with Lotus heads; a fair number of the special saloons ended up with them, as did a fair number of Group 2 Magnum rally cars and most if not all of the HS rally cars up to Portuguese '78, plus customer engines.

SVS 646R Is being built back to original specification by Michael Hoskins in Port William South West Scotland think all he had that was worth saving was the
number should surface in the near future.

The 3 Firenza GP2 rally cars had Lotus heads supplied by DTV WBB, SMT initially started developement with Lotus, so Magnum YGS666M was the only car to have the
Lotus head built by Lotus Sport, DTV had max of 240bhp compared to 255bhp of SMT. The 907 head is limited to how much air can get in, the 904 Lotus head can
flow 280bhp, Lotus had a few tricks to get extra power, can see on a works sunbeam head with the water flow (submarine). SMT then used WBB's Lotus heads on
the Chevettes then up to 245bhp, don't believe the Works Sunbeams power outputs as they were never tested on a dyno.

I don't think the pic Harry F put up was the car I had but hard to tell anything from the pic. The guy I sold it to did put big arches on it (unfortunately
from my viewpoint!) but I haven't seen it.
Had a look in G. Gauld's Ecosse book, Hugh Chalmers, Jimmy McRae and Hugh Mc Caig drove Chevette apparently. The engine I had with SVS had a 904 head with big valves and bronze seats. The car in my shed had a 2.6 with WBB engine number with a 904 head reputed 284BHP but unfortunately a rod made a bid for freedom at Kirkiston several years ago! The car looks like a proper G4 car, one of the guys in Ireland (I got it over there) suggested it was an ex SMT shell but there is no shell id on it at all. One of the ex works Firenzas is in America I think, can't remember the no or owners name but he emigrated to America some years ago and as far as I know took the car with him. I went to look at it with a friend who was going to quote for renovating it, was in the borders direction but the guy had come up from Cambridge area. |
