Posts: 1 24 April, 2009 10:26 AM	Tags : None Once the arches have set properly I will ad the front spoiler then blend it all in with Milliput. I will widen the arches a bit more to fit the Minilite wheels into them so they fit good. Still deciding to put the bumpers back on or fill in the bumper holes. Once the shell is prepped it will receive two-three coats of White Primer. Regarding the interior its to either have a historic type rollcage or make a spaceframe up As you can see not much more work apart from starting to fill the gaps under the arches with milliput which need to go off then I can sand and shape. The front end has had the front spoiler glued in last night and left to dry, then today its been filled in with milliput both front and behind and will be sanded down when dry. Again on the right side more milliput blending the gaps in The rear of the car has had the bumper holes filled as I am undecided whether to fit a bumper when all sprayed up, but if I do decide to ad a rear one then I can always glue it in place The interior of the car has had the original seats cut out which has left the tunnel with front floor and rear seats, but the seats have been filled again with Milliput to make a firewall for it. I am going to make a new bigger transmission tunnel for it too before painting that up Pics up later of that. The standard wheels have been left on as a guide for the arch location and I am also making the suspension setting lower for the model for when the new wheels go on. The model now has had some sanding and a first coat of White primer This is to see what it looks like in one colour and to show up any imperfections in either the arches or the milliput The front end has been filled in, but needs a bit more filling to do as the primer has showed up some small faults The side view looks a lot different now with the deep dish porsche wheels as they are wider and now with this becoming a mod sport saloon model the minilites where too narrow for it. From the rear the back end looks chunky with the arches and the wide wheels, but it still needs a bit more milliput into make it right. I will be getting started doing some more work on the shell, then while thats drying I can concentrate on the inside. The first coat of Gloss white was applied this evening to get a base for when it gets done Silver. I had some Silver spray but when I tried it on a test piece it wasn't right, so I will buy a brand new aerosol tin tomorrow if I can a vauxhall silver colour At the moment the ride height looks high, bit the base isn't screwed in yet I have fitted the front lights and grille just to see how the front looks now the spoiler is all blended in. It will be lifted out again when the Silver goes on. Still got to decide on design of rollcage and then fit the seats and find some decent decals for it

Posts: 773 18 May, 2009 7:44 AM DSG Member	My guess is the Vanguard Viva GT that was released a few years back. Haven't seen a HC other than the Thoroughbred models one - as that tends to sell at about £80 you've got to be pretty confident you're not going to mess it up.

Yes, and at 1/43 scale it's not great value for money it seems - the pictures I've seen don't really look that great. I'd love to see a 1:18 scale kit or diecast of the HPF... surely there are enough of us to petition Burago or whoever to get it happening. It worked a few years ago with the Airfix TSR-2!

Posts: 46 26 May, 2009 11:12 AM	its the old supply and demand question, for a 1.18 model the moulds (depending on detail required) could cost between 10 and 50k (10k would get a solid body with no opening parts,engine etc). double that by the time its made and distributed. if its a porsche ,lambo, ford etc selling 100k units is not really a problem hence why these are made and prices are reasonable, even cars which seem odd to us may have a big overseas market, plus then theres how many variations can be made from one mould. how many snoot models would sell ??? even if a company already make a model and you want a special livery a 1000 unit run is usually the minimum,

The finished model pic in particular shows weirdly distorted proportions, almost like the car has been chopped lengthways (or maybe it's just that the wheels are far too big). Building an accurate bodyshell shape and casting it in resin is something I could do - I'd be happy to attempt it and maybe sell resin shells to any interested club members - but to do that I require accurate profiles of the car. These would complete the drawings I've already made (which you're probably aware of) which would be the basis of a 3D model. I've put out requests for someone to help out with profiles before but didn't get much response. I'm aware of the problem of supply/demand but 3D prototyping is dropping in price enormously at the moment so if a CAD model could be constructed (I'd do it for free) then getting a physical prototype might cost a few hundred pounds. Duplicates can be made from that easily enough using simple silicon mould/polyurethane casting. In those terms there ought to be enough club members with an interest in an accurate HPF model to break even?

But I'm interested - I will see how this one looks and go from there. The photos aren't great, my main concern was the roof profile, it appears far too high at the rear of the doors. But it might be quite easy to cut a little bit out and drop the profile. In reality it will probably be years before I do much with it - I bought some white metal Audi quattro kits a few years back with the intention of making them over winter, but they're still in the boxes. I recall seeing a magazine that featured a device that's almost like a 3D printer - you hook it up to the computer, "print" the 3D CAD workpiece to it, and instead of just drawing it on paper, it uses cutters to actually shape the item. I guess there's a limit to what it can do, and I don't remember whether it was a concept or production item, but it was hoping to reduce the prototyping cost significantly.

I agree that the profiles is a big ask, which is why just put out the request and left it at that. If someone's enthusiastic enough to do it then great, otherwise, I'll wait... (until I get another HPF if necessary!) The 3D printer device is a reality. They are still quite big, expensive machines, but what's happening now is that smaller outfits are buying them then providing a one-off prototyping service for a few hundred pounds a pop. You send them a DXF file, they send you back the object. There are two basic ways they work - one is like an ink-jet printer that sprays a thick (by printing standards, maybe 1/4mm) layer of material that hardens on exposure to air, so the model is built up layer by layer. The other uses X/Y lasers in a tank of liquid raw material. Where the lasers intersect the spot is slightly heated which causes the mixture to solidify at that point. Naturally this also has to be built bottom-up so that the solid object doesn't sink! I think the printing method is looking to be the most commercially promising at the moment. I did scratch-build a HPF about 10 years ago, but I was never entirely happy with it. For one thing it was my first and so far only scratch-build effort, so I didn't have any previous experience to go on. I used photographic and some hand-drawn drawings based off them for the basic reference profiles and they weren't completely correct. I didn't know how to make proper-looking snoot wheels nor could find any kits parts that were even vaguely similar (what a pity the Cosworth Vega isn't considered a car worthy of a kit stateside) so I used some from a Burago Mercedes which are not even close except in basic size. The wheels set the scale for the model which came out as 1:15 which is slightly odd. The result is OK-ish, looking better from some angles (like direct side on) than others. This reflects the accuracy of the drawings as well as some compromises I had to make when actually building it (once again, lack of experience with scratchbuild). I have some photos somewhere, I'll post them. I could take some new ones but these days she's looking a bit sorry for herself as the sun has taken its toll (most of the windows have fallen out and those that remain are very discoloured) and lots of details have fallen off.

Second, I can't locate the original photos of the model (I seem to have mislaid a large number of images recently, not sure how) so I just got her down off the shelf and took a few snaps. They are fairly poor, taken in low light, and make it look in even worse shape. But it is in fairly bad shape - even models end up needing a restoration! The roof has warped (was always very thin plastic) and the paintwork has gone all blotchy. It's also very dusty. But you get the idea: By the way, the last pic makes it look bent like a banana - it's not, it's just the camera angle. But yes, the remainder of its inaccuracies can't be denied ;)

I could see how some things would be relatively easy to do (vans for example, especially removal vans which are largely flat, or steam engines which are mainly a tube and some flats) but something like a car strikes me as quite a job. I've seen some very impressive Ferrari models that have been built from scratch, but tend to sell at £10k upwards. For a model. I wouldn't have the patience to get anywhere near as far as you have. I notice the same seller on eBay now has the bodyshell only available, for a bit less money.

The fuel tank is the least of its problems :) You're dead right about vans being easier - slab sides. And that's more or less what we have here, for lack of knowing any better. I cut out the side profiles flat and then sort of bent them, adding the swage line as a piece of wire then covered in filler. The end result is much less curved than it should be and one of its biggest failings. I wouldn't build it that way if I did another one (and one reason I'd like to get accurate profiles). The other huge inaccuracy is the front air dam below the bumper is much too narrow, though it doesn't really show in the pics. I might give her a bit of a clean-up at the weekend...

Posts: 123 28 May, 2009 9:29 PM DSG Member	I bought a resin model Group 4 Chevette from the same seller with minilites to replicate my blue one, to be fair its still in the box and I appreciate the Chevette's a bit squarer and probably easier to do but the shell is bang on except for the tail lights, and the lack of cibies and mirrors which were shown in the completed model picture, I also got it for £14.95 plus P&P so thought it was worth a punt.

Posts: 788 29 May, 2009 7:36 AM DSG Member	Body-only HPF is about the same price (£15), or £25-odd with a chassis, motor etc. I didn't see the body-only version when I bought the complete thing, otherwise I'd probably have gone for the cheaper one. It arrived yesterday, it's reasonably reasonable I guess. The upper back end isn't right - the rear screen is too small and the shape of the roof isn't right, and I think that makes it look quite bad. The rest of it isn't terrible, the bonnet may be a little long, the wheel apertures a bit big, and the fuel filler is on the wrong side. Probably easier for a half-decent model maker to modify this shell than to make one from scratch. The body is much thicker than I expected, so would stand some modification. I'll post some more detailed pictures (than the eBay listing) when I get a minute.
