Home made dry sump, still requires baffles and scavage holes and pipes... Home made oil presure supply to engine plate and dry pump bracket......... Pump mounted front view .......... Pump mounted side view ...... Getrag 265 from XJS with 0.75 o/d top which will allow me to use the 4.6 lsd axle which is in the backgound of some of these pics. Just need to find time to get them progressed, the dry sump is close have all bits required have already fitted remote oil filter and arranged engine bay to give max clearence fitted remote oil filter with temp gauge and additional oil press guage take off points post a pick later, combined oil temp and pressure gauge fitted and functional . Posts: 876 14 July, 2009 8:18 PM DSG Member Wales Area Rep	Hi Brian am glad to say yes can you not see the home made look on the welding and brackets Thought its about time i posted some stuff up. The engine its on at the mo is the original GPY engine still std bore and crank is still std grind plus over 100k onit, proves to me these eng will last a long time if serviced regularly after all i dont spare the right foot when driving GPY can not see the point as i we have to live while we can. Posts: 878 14 July, 2009 8:33 PM DSG Member Wales Area Rep	Hey now that is praise from a man with your welding skills, to be honest the welding is not that good mig and well out of practice, but will be functional and strong not checked for leaks yet although sump will be running a vacuum so will not leak while driving. Redtop is back roomed at the mo as think the slant 4 deserves another bit at the cherry after all it as served us well we just want more power so will exhaust the options as our friend Harry told me "i have options still to use right here so try em and see" so thats where we are. If its a engine you need rem still happy to build you one you know i love doing it so would be a pleasure Phil

Posts: 979 14 July, 2009 8:43 PM DSG Member	You know my plans with the engine that I have and I am planning to remove it and start rebuild in the next couple of months, The problem with using MiG is the fact that it is very hard to get a proper seal unless the welding is spot on, a wee tip is to flush off the welding that you have done using flap discs which will highlight any pin holes and then turn up the juice on the welder enough to burn into the metal ( penetration) and you know it is right when it is nearly burning through the other side but leaving a small bead of molten metal on the reverse side of your welding, this will burn out any impurity's and seal the weld. The best option is to TiG weld the sump which guarantees a nice seal as well as a nice weld.

Posts: 880 14 July, 2009 8:56 PM DSG Member Wales Area Rep	BrianP see i know you are a welder man with that advise so will take it on board and post futher pics when done, although am only looking for a fair seal and function is my aim just hope it all works. BB i know you are right wrt the redtop its just the car and me want more power and we both know some good times are in us last outing at Combe we tailed a bda mk2 1800 with gains in corner and exit speed just failed on outright speed to pass but dont get me wronge we had a good session and we were 2 in car and him single but just gota get past em like we should. So if single slant needs more we go twin vaux or even lotus 9?? Lets see how it goes Phil

Posts: 884 14 July, 2009 9:26 PM DSG Member Wales Area Rep	Thanks BB i know you have a wealth of knowledge and exp plus you been there and done it so i hope one day i have a tee shirt like you. I have to be honest its getting it all to work as a package is top of the list and that is not just down to power and when i say power i mean torque as well as bhp, the balance of the car is very important we handle very well but only running rally spec and as we know up the power and it can change all the ballance. Hence the getrag as the zf ratios arnt good running std 052 at 3.7 and the 4.6 will kill the top end with 13in wheels and zf but the getrag with 0.75 5th will give 127 mph at 7k using these khumo 235/45 x 13`s as the zf will be 111 mph. But your input is always appreciated. Phil

Ever thought about using larger diam wheels probarbly a better range of sizes and compounds, having said that I stuck with the 13s, I know Tony ran a lot bigger diam wheel on the Transpeed Firenza but you would get into a bit of body mods then. Where does it all stop. Have we time to explain the dry sumping bit for Jon?

Posts: 886 14 July, 2009 9:48 PM DSG Member Wales Area Rep	BB well gearing is a good q as most people look at me and say 127 mph @ 7k is a slow, but i think on track esp Combe for GPY is well over the top if i actually get o 127 mph i then have to slow down for quarry hard enough with left hand approch and bump right on the breaking zone, at the mo we making 115 ish so another 5mph will put press on breaking but more importantly is pickup out of the corner to catch and give chance of o/t em, this is down to gear ratio`s as well as power, as out of both chiquane`s if i get it wronge and slow out am bogged and struggling, i know its down to driving but need to keep our options as flex as poss. Dry sump well where to start. Phil

Posts: 132 14 July, 2009 10:05 PM DSG Member Midland Area Rep	Phil people used to laugh at me when I said the Firenza was geared for a max of around 130, but the top speed isnt essential its what the car will do from say 40 to 100 thats probarbly where your going to be most of the time, I could hold Brian Chatfields M3 BMW out of the hairpin at Mallory and down into the devils elbow even though his car was much faster then mine, I know this doesnt seem to make much sense but it was all about the torque and power through that 40 to 100 mph range. It would pull a house side down but the engine was never a high rever. BB.

Posts: 889 14 July, 2009 10:14 PM DSG Member Wales Area Rep	Spot on BB any car given the time will make 100 mph but you need to get there quick to make it work, m3`s got me easy at mo on long straight (hence need a tad more power / torque ) but into and corner no diff actually think ot edge just even quicker out still lack the power, now i know they packing 300 + bhp but weight and gearing brings em towards us so with a few tweeks will close em down and its a goal we have For you i know running 2.6 sc torque was good but also seam to rem you made good power, but thought you also were running dry sump ? What diff BB did you run ? Phil

Posts: 133 15 July, 2009 9:38 PM DSG Member Midland Area Rep	Phil, the diff i have was surposedly very special, i bought it from a guy in london who ran a firenza drag racer hence it came with a 4.1 to 1 c & p with a spare 4.6 to 1 c & p. It was 1 of 3 or 4 axles built buy Gerry Johnstone and is a Hewland dog style lsd built into a 052 casing. I carnt confirm it was built my Gerry or what exactly is in the casing because I have never had it in bits, but i do know that the diff was either in or out if you understand what i mean. Instead of been a lsd it was a no slip diff! The first time i used it was a Oulton Park on the long circuit and heading into the hairpin island bend one of the afore mentioned bda escorts was bearing down on me at rapid rate of knots, he cut inside me on the corner and i,m afriad the red mist decended and out of the hairpin i floored the firenza to try and get the place back, this resulted in me and Firenza minus droopsnoot in the tyre wall on the inside edge of the track pointing in the direction from which i had just come with bda hairing off into the distance. Photographer on the hairpin thought it was brilliant and SOLD me a set of photos depicting my inept driving. Needless to say lesson learnt in how to drive with a diff that goes from wheel spin to locked up solid! The 4.1 wasnt ideal for circuit racing but boy did it launch off the line. was more suited at Mallory or Pembrey than the longer circuits, it ran out of revs on the full circuit at Donington but the diff cost us a kidney and i didnt have the money to try and get a different ratio for it! BB.
